Meet Your Instructor
Hi, I'm Ryan McCormick - a high school math teacher in San Diego and the founder of McPrep.
My mission is simple: make learning engaging, competitive, and actually enjoyable.
Today's students are used to constant stimulation and fast feedback, yet most instruction hasn't adapted. As a result, focus drops and motivation fades quickly. I've built my teaching style around this reality.
Through targeted strategies, fast-paced instruction and live practice rounds, I keep students locked in from start to finish. The result is simple - more focus, more confidence, and better scores.

FAQ
Answers for parents and students.
Most students benefit from focusing on one test rather than splitting prep time across both. The SAT and ACT test similar content but reward different strengths — choosing strategically can meaningfully raise your score. Take our free 3-minute quiz to get a personalized recommendation on which test fits you best.
Research from College Board and ACT Inc. suggests the ideal testing window is junior year — this gives students enough academic preparation to score well, while leaving time to retest if needed.
A general timeline to follow:
- Sophomore spring (April–June): Earliest reasonable attempt for high-achieving students who want an early baseline score. Not recommended as a primary attempt.
- Junior year (fall through spring): The sweet spot. Most students take the test once or twice during this window, with time to prep, test, review results, and retest before college applications are due.
- Senior summer or early fall (June–October): Last viable window. Scores need to be in before most college application deadlines in November and December. Cutting it close — not recommended as a first attempt.
The earlier you start, the more options you have.
Research consistently shows that students who retake the SAT or ACT — with focused preparation in between — almost always improve their score. But there are diminishing returns.
Here's what the data says:
- First attempt: Establishes your baseline. Most students score below their potential simply due to unfamiliarity with the test format.
- Second attempt: The highest-value retake. Students who prepare between attempts see the largest average score gains here.
- Third attempt: Worthwhile if you fell short of a specific target score or had an off day.
- Beyond three attempts: Research from College Board shows minimal score improvement after the third attempt for most students. At that point the time, cost, and stress rarely justify another sitting.
The sweet spot is 2–3 attempts with structured prep in between — which is exactly what McPrep is designed for.
Yes — and increasingly so. Recent research shows that many prestigious universities, including Yale, Dartmouth, and MIT, have reinstated standardized testing requirements after going test-optional. While scores are still optional at many schools, a strong SAT or ACT score strengthens applications, unlocks merit scholarships, and signals readiness to admissions committees.
SAT scores typically improve 100–250 points, and ACT scores 2–4 points — but results vary based on your starting score, how much you engage during sessions, and your commitment to independent practice outside of McPrep courses.
Students in 10th or 11th grade who want to maximize their score without spending months in prep. Especially effective for students who struggle to stay focused in traditional tutoring — our gamified format is built for exactly that.
